I wake up at 7 a.m in the Hamptons. I love the morning. I start with warm water with a whole lemon squeezed in to get things going. Then I follow that with a cappuccino made with So Delicious Dairy-Free Hazelnut Coconut Milk. I let the dogs out, feed them, and enjoy my coffee while I chat with girlfriends on the phone. Then Sailor—my daughter, who’s in her last year of high school—leaves for school.

I have a little bit of breakfast like avocado toast. We have lots of gluten-free toast options in our house, [because] Sailor is gluten-free. I toast the bread and smash the avocado on top with a twist of Himalayan salt. I also mix it up and take a handful of pine nuts or roasted pumpkin seeds and toss them on there. Or peanut butter first and then avocado. If I’m feeling really decadent, I’ll use Smart Balance’s dairy-free butter spread first.

I go in and out of being vegan. I think being a flexible vegan is the way to go. But occasionally, there’s mozzarella. Life is too short to be so stringent. I’m not hurting an animal to gather the milk. I’ve been a vegetarian for most of my life—I’ve been macrobiotic, vegan, and a food combination person…I’ve tried all the different things. A plant-based diet is a good thing, but then there are some days when life happens.

Then I exercise. I like the Total Gym [machine], lifting weights, and the Peloton bicycle at home. Or I run for two miles since I live near the beach. I believe that variety is the spice of life. You have to find ways to mix it up!
