The first thing Julianne Hough does every morning will have you rethinking your entire day

Welcome to My Morning Routine, where Julianne Hough and other good-life gurus share their personal (frequently surprising, often healthy) morning rituals—to help you make your a.m.’s more awesome.

Julianne Hough
Actress, dancer, and fashion designer. Her fall ’16 athleisure collection with MPG Sport goes on-sale September 15.

The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning—which is usually around 6:30 a.m.—is sit up and think of five things I’m grateful for that have either happened to me already or that I want to do that day that will in turn make me grateful. I set little spiritual goals for my day. They don’t have to be big achievements—just something like wanting to smile at 10 people and seeing them smile back.

Then, I get out of bed, brush my teeth, and get changed. My fiance [Brooks Laich] is so cute—at night, he preps juices for us using fresh produce he buys at the farmers’ market so we have them ready to drink in the morning. We have a good system going: I cook dinner while he makes them. So after I change in the morning, I have the juice he prepped the night before, which has kale, spinach, cucumber, lemon, ginger, an apple or pear, and sometimes beets.

If I need a little more energy for the day, I take a little bit of oatmeal from my fiance’s huge gallon that he eats and have it before my 8 a.m. workout. I like to mix up my workouts, doing something different almost every day. I do Body by Simone, Tracy Anderson, Core Power Yoga, I just tried Anna Kaiser…. I really tend to go for more dance-inspired [classes]. I think I would do [a dance workout] even if I wasn’t a dancer, because it works the little tiny muscles that are hard to get when you’re just doing a squat or lunge.

After I work out, I come home and have a protein shake or steamed eggs with avocado and tomato. Sometimes I won’t do my makeup or hair after I shower—I really only do them if I have somewhere to go that day. My fiance and I have Sonos speakers in our house, so I put on a Kygo Pandora channel or Alt-J to listen to while I get ready. Then, I’m set to get on with my day!

Curious how more influencers start their days? Hilary Duff’s involves taking a power shot every a.m., and Cameron Diaz chugs a liter of water.
