“Avocado hand” was just the injury of the summer—last summer, that is. The ailment even caused a spike in emergency room visits, and it’s all due to cutting that beloved fibrous fruit the wrong way. (Heck, even perfect-human-specimen Meryl Streep fell victim to food-prep #fail back in 2012, before avocados essentially won the Academy Award for Breakfast Staple of the Decade.) Unfortunately, former Bachelorette star Andi Dorfman didn’t get the memo and implement appropriate safety precautions, because she just suffered a serious avocado-caused mishap.

In a series of recent Instagrams, the author and former Assistant District Attorney shared details about the injury she endured while cutting into the creamy ingredient: “It’s all fun and games until the avocado decides to run off with your finger,” she writes. In fact, her incident was so severe that she had to have surgery, but thankfully her “tendons and nerves have been reunited,” she adds.

Going through surgery and being stuck in a cast—even if it is a trendy pink-camo edition—is definitely the hard way to learn how you shouldn’t handle handle the versatile meal ingredient. Luckily, you don’t need to avoid the fruit in fear that your fingers could be toast; there are some products on the market that make it easy to get your healthy-fat fix, no super-sharp knives included.
