There is so much to love about fall: the changing of the leaves, the opportunity to layer, hot drinks, working hard to break a sweat when exercising, and taking the time to reassess my routine and make sure I’m at my healthiest going into winter.
Every year, I make a few small changes to my daily routine come autumn that make a huge difference in my health and my energy. It’s how I make sure I take the summer glow I adore all the way through to next spring.

1. I adjust my diet
I find in fall and winter it’s more important than ever to be strict with my alkaline diet. I always start my day with WelleCo’s Alkalizing Greens. 2. I revamp my exercise routine
I’m not as hard-core as I used to be with my exercise. These days it’s 45 minutes of something I can do outside where I break a sweat, like running along the beach at home in Miami. During the cooler months I often double my exercise—I do something in the morning and then again at night. Even if it’s an evening walk, I love the smell that comes from everyone’s chimneys on a really chilly night! During the day I love hiking (I was just in Aspen, where they have amazing trails before the snow settles in), and I also immerse myself in yoga. Yoga can be practiced anywhere, plus it warms you from the inside out—just make sure you break a sweat!
3. I add sauna time
If I am spending time in cold places over fall and winter, like New York City or London, I take regular saunas. Staying warm during winter is essential for good immunity, and infrared saunas are especially good. More and more gyms have these available.
4. I opt for hot drinks
Sipping on steaming hot tea is another lovely thing about fall. I am a big fan of starting my day with hot water and lemon, and as the weather cools down I include it before each meal. I have also been exploring bone broth—either to drink like a coffee or used in soups and stews. It’s great for immunity.
5. I do a mini-cleanse
Before winter begins I find it’s great to do a little cleanse, and after spending a week at The Ranch Malibu I am a fan of going vegan for a week. A vegan week means no fish, eggs, or animal products, but rather than just choosing raw recipes—which I like in summer—I go for warm foods as well, which I think is really important in fall. To start my day, I go with a mini-cleanse smoothie bowl that captures the flavors of fall.

Banana, Pear, & Vanilla Smoothie Bowl
Makes 2 servings
2 frozen bananas
1 cup almond milk
1/2 fresh pear
1/2 cup ice
1/2 tsp vanilla powder or extract
1 scoop Super Elixir Vanilla Nourishing Protein
Place the smoothie ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour the smoothie into a glass or a shallow bowl and top with your favorite toppings.
