I’m often told that eating healthily is difficult and expensive. While some foods can be pricey (ever check out the price of raw almond butter?), that is not always the case.

Superfoods (or nutrient-dense foods) are often thought of as rare, difficult to find, and expensive because of a “more is always better” mindset. But actually, it’s all about finding the freshest whole foods possible—they’re going to do more for you body than a powder or an extract that’s been processed.

Try these underrated superfoods

I love goji berries, acai, and chia seeds—they’re amazing, and as whole foods, they’re incredibly nutritious. But if you find that they’re out of your budget, why not enjoy fresh blueberries in season, or berries that are native to your area? They’re superfoods in their own right!

A few others: Purple cabbage has a large amount vitamin C—just adding it to the top of your salad adds a burst of nutrition.

Carrots are fantastic for your hair, and pumpkin seeds are really high in zinc and B vitamins. And sea vegetables are amazing—for your hair, for your skin, for your energy in general. And to me, garlic is a superfood, as well as bananaskale, and spinach. These are all big parts of my diet.

I believe our planet was meant to provide abundance all over—not just in certain places—and all of these foods are affordable.

One of the best superfoods of all

And of course, there’s another food that is super affordable, easy to find, and a powerful aid to your health and beauty: lemons.

Besides adding a refreshing flavor, lemons inject your body­ and skin, from the inside out­, with a blast of vitamin C and enzymes. Lemons are associated with boosting your liver’s function and tissue regeneration, which is critical for ongoing cleansing and looking and feeling your best, as the liver is our main detoxifying organ. It tirelessly works to help prevent acidic and aging toxins from building up. So in other words, love your liver with nourishing lemon, and your liver will love you back with clear eyes, glowing skin, and improved immunity and energy.

For just a few dollars a month, you can incorporate more lemons into your life­ and start enhancing your natural beauty in these super simple and easy ways:

1. Hot water with lemon

Get into the habit of a hot mug of water with the juice of half a lemon squeezed in first thing in the morning. Many of my clients have noticed dramatic results in as little as a week with this practice, reporting more radiant skin, more complete elimination, and more energy. Definitely go for this first thing,­ even if you still feel you need a morning coffee afterwards.

2. Add lemon to your water bottle

Add some slices, peels intact (be sure to use organic here) into your BPA­-free bottles. This tasty, refreshing water will also help prevent you from reaching for sugary or artificial “flavored” drinks.

3. Toss your salads with it

Try a simple salad dressing of lemon juice, raw apple cider vinegar, a touch of olive oil, sea salt and freshly cracked pepper. Not only will you get the benefits of the lemons when making this simple but delicious dressing, but you will avoid the vast plethora of scary (and beauty-busting) ingredients in commercial salad dressings.

4. Add it to your dips

Try using fresh lemon juice in dips for raw veggies (like my Raw Chickpea ­Free Hummus), versus buying lemon-flavored dips where the (perhaps minimal) amounts of fresh lemon juice are pasteurized and sit around on the shelf, pretty much depleting all the vitamin C content and enzymes.

5. Don’t forget about lemon zest

The lemon peel can contain upwards of 5 to 10 times more vitamins, nutrients, and health benefits than the lemon juice itself. (Remember that it’s essential to use organic lemons if you use zest.) All you need is a little grate that you can get at any kitchen supply store. Grate some fresh lemon zest on top of soups, freshly baked or sautéed veggies, or salads and you’ll get a bold, bright flavor that is also cleansing your system. Can’t beat that!
