5 new healthy Manhattan (fast) food spots you need to know about

1/7
healthy fast food 2So you can’t swing by the now shuttered Organic Avenue to grab a Broccoli Slaw anymore, but here’s the good news: a whole new crop of spots making quick, healthy food opened in Manhattan this October.

From vegan quinoa sweet potato burgers in Union Square to seasonal, hearty salads in Morningside Heights, these cafes and restaurants should definitely make eating well between (and during) meetings way easier.

By the way, fall’s been a great season for new healthy dinner spots, too, with the debut of vegan fine dining destination Avant Garden in September, the opening of a downtown Pizza Beach location with an even healthier menu, and the return of Rouge Tomate fast approaching. (Though not fast enough.)

About that Organic Avenue thing? Chalk it up to bad management, not a drop in demand for healthy, nutritious options. Here are five brand-new healthy Manhattan (fast) food spots you really need to know about. —Lisa Elaine Held

This NYU-adjacent spot is the growing vegan restaurant group’s latest location. It’s mostly grab-and-go but has 18 seats (we counted) if you feel like staying to enjoy your Smoky Avocado or Karmic Kale wrap. You’ll also find cold-pressed juices and beyond delicious vegan baked goods on the menu. 15 E. 13th St., between University Pl. and Fifth Ave., Union Square, blossomdujour.com

Chic downtown restaurant favorite Dimes just debuted this quick-service spot, with some favorites from the restaurant (like the Breakfast Sandwich and Big Salad) and lots of bowls (Energy Acai for breakfast, Kimchi with brown rice and egg for lunch), which you can take out or eat at the counter (and a couple small tables). An adjoining space will soon also stock grocery items and Dimes apothecary products. 143 Division St., near Canal, Chinatown, dimesnyc.com

Okay, food is not the focus at the first Manhattan location of Brooklyn’s Matchabar, but they do have pastries, sandwiches, and wraps that can you pair with drinks like a Coconut Chai Matcha Latte or Cinnamon Maple Matcha. Can you say cozy fall afternoon tea break? 256 W. 15th St., between Seventh and Eighth Aves., Chelsea, matchabarnyc.com

The salad joint that’s taking over the world has arrived uptown, not accidentally next to Columbia University, where both professors and students will no doubt line up for seasonal, fresh salads like Curry Cauliflower+Quinoa and Guacamole Greens. It’s the fifth NYC location for the healthy chain, and another will open on the Upper West Side before the end of the year. 2937 Broadway, at 115th St., Morningside Heights, sweetgreen.com

Food halls—like Gansevoort Market and Hudson Eats—are popping up all over lately, and the newest is Urbanspace Vanderbilt, next to Grand Central. Good news: it’s got lots of healthy options, including Manhattan outposts of Brooklyn favorites Mimi’s Hummus and Roberta’s pizza, plus Amali Mou, a fast casual concept from sustainable Mediterranean restaurant Amali, serving fresh salads, gyros, and more. 230 Park Ave. (on Vanderbilt Ave, between 45th and 46th Sts.), Midtown East, urbanspacenyc.com
