From blue Afros and crown braids to waist-length curls and tapered cuts, Curl Fest 2016 brought naturally curly-haired beauties en masse to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. The third annual festival captured the energy of the natural-hair movement through music, dance, food, and curl conversation, thus making its mark as the largest celebration of natural hair.

“Wearing my hair curly is my way of expressing freedom. I love purples and blues, and wearing my natural hair in bright colors is a way to fully be myself.”
“I switch up my hair depending on how I feel. Sometimes I wear it straight; other times I wear a big Afro. I tend to match my hair with my clothing, too.”
Amber Janielle and Tara Watts
“I straightened my hair when I was 12 years old to blend in and be like everyone else. It wasn’t until college that I decided to embrace the hair the God gave me.” —Watts
“I call my braids bohemian chic—they’re fun and [wearing them] allows me to embrace my ethnicity.”
“One time I wore a box-braid bob with blonde, pink, burgundy, blue, and purple colors. I kept my edges dark, so I could be professional at work. When I wanted to be fun, I let my hair down and showed off the color.”
