Fitness phenom Taryn Toomey brings The Class to Los Angeles in May

TarynToomeyFiveTaryn Toomey has earned the accolade of “fitness phenom” (by us!), and she’s proved it with The Class, a workout that’s become a force in downtown Manhattan—and a magnet for fit New Yorkers as well as a posse of healthy celebrities with great fitness taste, like Naomi Watts and Christy Turlington.

Which is why it makes sense that the white-hot workout will finally be offered pop-up style in Los Angeles on May 6–8 with daily morning classes in Brentwood’s MNR Studio (65 minutes for $35). And it’s completely worth cheating on your regular workout for.

TarynToomeySevenThe Class is both a mat-based boot camp and a vehicle for emotional catharsis. You’ll work a muscle group to the max (like your left glute for an entire song) while Toomey, a former fashion industry vet and yoga anatomy geek, asks you how you’re talking to yourself when the going gets tough, and you want to quit, and your inner story of self woe starts to play on repeat…

Just when you wonder if anyone will notice the sweat (or tears) pouring down your face, she’ll crank the music and you’ll stomp your just-worked leg or run madly in place like a football player, while literally screaming out the inner drama.

The Class is a cleanse without the juice. “It’s all about moving the junk out of your body that accumulates,” says Toomey, and “instead of letting your story be about why you can’t do something take over when life gets rough, welcoming the change.”

After The Class, you might wonder if your shrink really knows what goes on in your head like Toomey does.

And from an aesthetic perspective Toomey’s a goddess (hey, we call them like we see them), often dressed in knee-skimming capris, a low-cut cotton tank she knots at the back, and twists or braids in her hair that somehow manage to stay put during the burpees-on-the-beat.

The combination of serious sweat and raw emotion that’s drawn out during The Class is not just a fitness genre-breaker, it’s a life-change experience not to be missed. —Melisse Gelula
