Michael Phelps is spending his retirement at the barre

What does a 31-year-old athlete, with a record-holding 23 Olympic medals, do during retirement? Hit the barre, apparently.

In his first few months of retirement, Michael Phelps has avoided the pool (for the time being), in favor of a ballet-inspired workout at Barre3 in Paradise Valley, AZ.

Joining his fiancé Nicole Johnson, who is a regular at the studio, Phelps traded in his butterfly and breaststroke for some intense seat work—while sporting camo Under Armour shorts.

While Barre3 declined to comment on how he performed in the class out of respect, our guess is that it was gold-medal-worthy—although fellow Team USA swimmer Conor Dwyer had some doubts, commenting on Johnson’s photo saying, “No way [Michael Phelps] did the entire class! Calling your bluff.” Whatever happened, we’re sure Phelps gave it his Olympic best.

With all of his newfound free time, maybe the swimmer has some spinning or CrossFit in his future, too?
