Spring is all about new beginnings, and many fitness studios are embracing that fact this season.

Powerhouse brands like Barry’s Bootcamp and Pure Barre are expanding, spin junkies are getting cool, new spots to hop on bikes in Midtown and the East Village, and yet another space for climbers is debuting in Brooklyn.

We scoped out the nine most exciting new workout studios in New York City (listed in alphabetical order), in what looks to be a very sweaty season.

Barry's Bootcamp UES

Barry’s Bootcamp Upper East Side

Summertime Hamptons devotees of the crazy popular weight training and running-interval workout have been anxiously awaiting its arrival in their Manhattan ‘hood, and that wait is now over. The space, which includes a storefront entrance but is up a staircase on the second floor, feels like an intimate, uptown version of the same Barry’s that downtown lifters-and-treaders know and love, with a large workout studio, a Fuel Bar, spacious locker rooms, and a retail area. And instructors rotate between studios, so there are plenty of stars on the schedule, too.

Dogpound

The DogPound

This super-buzzy fitness hotspot is the first real home for the tight-knit group of trainers, led by Kirk Myers, who created a celebrity- and model-loved personal training brand while leading workouts in rented spaces around the city over the last few years. Expect a focus on one-on-one sessions, with the exception of a new boxing class program, created with the help of former pro boxer Regilio Benito Tuur. Classes take place in a ring and involve shadowboxing and pads, not bags.

Flywheel Astor Place

Flywheel Astor Place

Flywheel’s newest studio finally opened in March after lots of delays, but the timing coincided perfectly with the brand’s big refresh, reflected in the studio’s LED lighting system and updated Torq Board design. It’s also the indoor cycling giant’s largest studio to date, with more than 60 bikes.

MetroRock

Climbing gyms are becoming more popular across the city, and this new space will likely only add to the buzz. Based in New England, MetroRock has two locations in Massachusetts and one in Vermont, and the Brooklyn spot will including fitness and yoga studios alongside climbing walls. It will also share a building with a new food hall, according to Brooklyn Based—perfect for post-climb meals with your crew.

Pure Barre Upper East Side, Second Avenue

The toned gams of Pure Barre fans may be the natural result of endless pulsing, but the national chain’s business appears to be on steroids. This latest studio, set to open in early- to mid-May, will be the brand’s seventh location in Manhattan and 11th in New York City. Bonus: it’s basically right across the street from the aforementioned Barry’s Bootcamp, in case you’re one half of a couple with differing fitness tastes or prefer to balance your treadmill sprint with booty tucks.

Swerve Midtown

Two years after opening in the Flatiron, Swerve is bringing its team-based indoor cycling concept to Midtown office workers, in a space that is sprawling and impressively designed. A spacious smoothie bar and locker area comes with ample space for friendly (or corporate) bonding pre- and post-class, and the locker rooms are equally roomy and stocked with amenities to make it easy to get in a ride before work. The cycling studio itself holds 60 bikes with plenty of elbow room, where Swerve’s stellar instructors deliver some of the most challenging rides in the city.

NYC gym legend David Barton is back with a 40,000-square-foot manifestation of his latest vision, complete with a pool lit with colored LED lights, murals among cardio and weight machines, locker rooms (with sauna and steam room) you could get lost in, juice bar, and an interactive spin class program (by Les Mills) that makes you feel like you’re riding in a video game. Not to mention the regular group fitness schedule and metabolic assessment program Barton swears by for body transformation.

Tone House

The toughest group workout in the city is getting a new home in Murray Hill that’s three times the size of its original Union Square studio (which will be closing). Set to open on May 16, the space will include full locker rooms with some cool athlete-specific amenities, new equipment, and 101 classes on the schedule for those who have been scared, er, want to ease their way into the intensity.

Y7 Union Square

Trendy yoga spot Y7, known for its loud beats and dark rooms, just opened its fifth studio, in Union Square (after recently expanding to Los Angeles, too). In addition to a main studio that fits 30 yogis, it has a private studio for up to six, in case you prefer a more intimate hip-hop flow. The owners report that the opening is in response to the fact that classes are often sold out with waitlists, and that they’re “actively working on” an Upper East Side location, next.
