On Saturday, October 13, a bevy of boutique fitness brands hope to woo throngs of New Yorkers to barre workouts with live DJs and spin classes with vegan snacks—just like when fashion brands uncork the champagne and offer makeovers to draw crowds on Fashion’s Night Out.
Only at this event, it’s acceptable to wear your yoga pants.
Called Sweaty Saturday, the collaboration and day-long event will transform the city’s fitness landscape into a map of workout parties galore.
It’s the brainchild of SLT owner Amanda Freeman (with help from Flywheel co-founder Jay Galluzzo), who brought the idea to boutique-fitness booking site Fitist. “We definitely looked to the fashion industry for inspiration for the event,” says Fitist co-founder Neda Talebian Funk.
“We see this as an opportunity to not only raise money for a great cause and to make the day about health and wellness, but to also unite the industry a bit and celebrate what has become a real important part of the fitness world here—the boutique studios,” says Talebian Funk.
The boutique fitness brands
Close to 30 New York City studios, representing pretty much every type of workout, are participating, including SLT, Barry’s Bootcamp, Kinected, Refine Method, Pilates Proworks, Pure Yoga, As One, and so many more.
Just like on Fashion Night Out, each brand will have free reign to plan its own in-studio event.
Uplift, known for its “Workout and Wine,” will be offering half-price classes and an open house with Bloody Marys and Mimosas, healthy snacks, and giveaways.
Celeb-fave Body by Simone is hosting back-to-back dance cardio classes throughout the day set to a live DJ.
Sweat for a couple good causes
What every studio has in common? They’ll donate a minimum of $500 to Healthcorps, Dr. Oz’s organization that works to eliminate childhood obesity. There will be opportunities for participants to give individually, too.
“Because the industry is so competitive and the number of studios keeps growing, the community is a little bit fragmented,” explains Talebian Funk. “Part of our philosophy is to celebrate the fact that each and every one of these studios has so many strengths and assets, and we’re all about promoting the different talents and skills of all the fitness professionals involved.”
And the Sweaty Saturday team plans to keep the momentum going and hopefully build the sweat fest into an annual occurrence—growing it to a national, and even global level. BYO towel. —Lisa Elaine Held
