7 New York Hotels With Hot and Healthy Amenities

The Out NYCMost have gyms. Some have spas. And many even stock free bikes for getting a workout as you pedal from MoMA to the Brooklyn Bridge. (Sorry, Citibike.) But lately, New York City hotels have really upped the amenities ante for the health-conscious guests, adding yoga classes, workout clothes, super-healthy room service, running concierges, and even a fitness curator.

“The majority of people are on business, and they realize your health is as important as your job,” says fitness curator-trainer Danielle Harrison, at Ink 48, a Kimpton Hotel in Hell’s Kitchen. You can hire her to wake you up for a break-of-dawn workout or tap her expertise on the best running route.

Of course, wedging your out-of-towners into a cramped apartment can get unhealthy fast. Got visitors who'd be happier at one of these seven New York hotels with hot and healthy amenities than on your fold-out sofa? Read on. Or better yet, send them this article, and a healthy hint. —Lisa Elaine Held

Element HotelsElement New York Times Square

If eco-friendly is your jam, you might be surprised that you can find it right in Times Square. Element by Westin's Times Square location is LEED certified and has eco appliances and filtered tap water, in place of plastic bottles, in every room.

As is usually the case, most of the features that make it better for the earth also make it better for you. Like cleaning products that are low on toxic chemicals (and therefore toxic vapors) and large windows that let in tons of natural light. (What's up, vitamin D?)

The coolest feature? Your indoor cycling session in the fitness center will also charge your iPhone or iPad.

Gansevoort MeatpackingGansevoort Meatpacking

At the Gansevoort Hotel in the Meatpacking District, you can skip the tired treadmill routine that only prolongs your jet lag. Instead of a tiny gym with a few standard machines, there's an on-site Exhale Spa, with fun, calorie-burning Core Fusion barre and yoga classes. Not to mention a menu of high-quality, spa services.

The happening hotel also provides stylish bikes and helmets for riding alongside the High Line. And it recently began stocking fresh juices from Juice Press, an amazing offering for fighting travel fatigue, and for quickly picking up on the habits of Manhattanites.

This Hell’s Kitchen boutique hotel debuted a Runner’s Amenity Kit earlier this year, which allows guests to pick up a Hudson River running map, a pre-loaded iPod shuffle with headphones, a sports watch to track your miles, and a running belt with water bottles. They’ll also have an energy bar and sports drink waiting for you when you return.

The Kit was so successful, the team decided to bring trainer Danielle Harrison on to act as Fitness Curator. Harrison does in-room yoga sessions, personal training in the gym, and can recommend nutrition plans.

And on-site restaurant, Print, is known for its organic, locally-sourced, haute health food. (It even employs a full-time forager.)

The JamesThe James

You might have visited this downtown hotspot’s gorgeous rooftop for cocktails at its lounge, The Jimmy, but the hotel also hosts twice-weekly yoga classes, hosted by Serene, in the same stunning location.

The classes are part of the hotel's Urban Athlete program, which also offers bikes for street cycling, workout sessions with celeb personal trainer Oscar Smith, and a four-mile guided running tour that points out cultural and historical landmarks while you sweat.

And The James adds fun elements throughout the year, like Tour de France-simulating ProForm stationary bikes you can ride in the Urban Garden this July.

The Out NYCThe Out NYC

Often in-room hotel amenities are more toxic than airplane food. But The Out, a gay-friendly hotel, partnered with American Medicinal Arts to create natural and organic products inspired by Mediterranean bathing cultures. In your room, you'll find handmade lemongrass bar soap, rosemary cedarwood peppermint conditioning shampoo, and more.

The products are also used during treatments in the gorgeous spa (see photo).

And, in addition to the luxe fitness center, the 2,000-square-foot "Great Lawn" offers an astroturf space for lounging and the occasional yoga or boot camp class.

Trump HotelsTrump International and Trump Soho

The Trump Hotel Collection launched a comprehensive healthy living program called Trump Wellness in June.

At its two New York properties, guests can now request in-room yoga mats, weights, and workout bands, plus Under Armour fitness apparel and sneakers, and iPods loaded with workout playlists tailored to their tastes.

The program also includes a special room service menu with vegan, gluten-free, and organic choices that list nutrition facts, and a "quick bites" option that delivers healthy snacks in 15 minutes or less (in case you're in serious need of post-workout protein).

Workout RoomWestin New York Grand Central and Times Square

Westin has been a leader in the "healthier hotels" space, especially for runners who are on the road. Its RunWestin program, developed in partnership with New Balance, offers group runs with a Run Concierge or mapped routes you can follow solo. And you can lighten your suitcase by borrowing New Balance workout gear and sneakers.

If you're a reclusive workout type, you can even book your stay in a "WestinWorkout Room," which comes with a treadmill or stationary bike, dumbbells, fitness DVDs, resistance bands and stability balls—so you can literally roll out of bed into a burpee.

Plus, the properties feature a nutritionist and MD-developed superfoods menu that includes nutrient-packed foods like avocado, blueberries, wild salmon, and spinach.
