As we move through the world, we give off a certain energetic vibe or aura that’s thought to radiate from our physical being and be felt by those in our orb. Maybe yours is one of fierce determination and assertiveness, or perhaps it’s more of a healing and empathetic energy. You could be a creative force who marches to the beat of their own drum or someone who views the world through a lens of logic. In any case, your particular set of energetic qualities manifests as one or more of the 10 main aura colors (or, if you’re Taylor Swift, as the specific color of radiant moonstone… but I digress).

Typically, finding your aura involves getting a professional reading or a special aura photograph taken by an aura reader. Knowing how to read auras is a specific skill; both will offer you the most detailed picture of your aura’s makeup (and all the energetic traits associated with it), you can also find the main color(s) of your aura with an online aura color quiz—like this one created by aura expert Pamala Oslie or this one, by aura reader Megan Firester, who goes by Mystic Michaela.

How to use an aura color quiz

Taking an online aura quiz involves answering questions that assess your personality traits, temperament, and general outlook on life. The result is the aura color (or colors) with which your answers most closely correspond and the energetic qualities that those colors reflect (more on what each color means below).

“You need to honor who you really are deep inside, instead of answering with what you think people would want you to put.”—Pamala Oslie, aura expert

To get the most use out of any aura color quiz, it’s key to be honest with yourself while answering the questions, says Oslie, author of Life Colors: What the Colors in Your Aura Reveal. “You need to honor who you really are deep inside, instead of answering with what you think people would want you to put,” she says. This way, the result will reflect your true, well, colors and not the colors of someone whom you’d like to be (or whom you assume others want you to be).

Once you have your color result, you can use it as a starting point for self-exploration, says OslieBecause your aura reflects your true nature, she says, understanding its makeup can offer valuable insights into how you perceive yourself and others, plus your demeanor, desires, and motivations. And to be clear, there are no bad or less desirable aura colors, says Firester, who’s the host of the “Know Your Aura” podcast and author of the forthcoming book What’s My Aura?. The qualities associated with different colors just reflect unique strengths and weaknesses.

According to Firester, you may also get different aura color results from each quiz you take—and that’s totally okay. Different quizzes may just include slightly different sets of colors (for example, Oslie’s quiz includes 14 compared to the usual 10), and the specific color identification is less important than the characteristics described in the result, anyway.

“Don’t get so stuck on the color, and pay attention to the words that come after,” says Firester. As you read through the description, she recommends asking yourself questions about how the characteristics described might show up in different aspects of your life. “The introspection and the spiritual journey that exploration takes you on is the point,” she says.

For example, if you take a quiz and your aura color is revealed to be blue, you’d find that the associated characteristics are, among others, being empathetic and striving to be of service to others. You might then ask yourself how these traits resonate with your identity and your approach to your life path, career, or relationships, suggests Firester. Perhaps you find that you often embody other peoples’ feelings as your own, and that this causes you to sideline your own emotions—or maybe you take pride in the fact that you can readily anticipate others’ needs. The idea is to do some self-reflection using your result, and see what comes up.

What each aura color means

  • Red: People with red auras, according to Firester, are naturally assertive and excel in leadership roles where they can take charge.
  • Orange: Focused and energetic, orange auras are “people who enjoy inspiring others by taking the most innovative road they can,” says Firester.
  • Yellow: Yellow auras are curious, honest, and energetic, says Firester. “They love direct and clear communication.”
  • Green: Green auras are organized, efficient, and logical thinkers, says Oslie.
  • Blue: People with a blue aura, says Oslie, are naturally empathetic, thoughtful, and nurturing with a constant drive to help others.
  • Indigo: Indigo auras are deeply empathetic and can read others extremely well, says Firester.
  • Turquoise: Firester calls those with turquoise auras “old soul and quiet healers who mirror others to their own selves.”
  • Pink: “Pinks are really fun,” says Firester, adding that they’re optimistic, loving romantics.
  • Violet: “Purples are creative, intuitive, rebellious people who crave change and artistic outlets,” says Firester.
  • Lavender: According to Oslie, lavender auras are visionary daydreamers who have the gift of a child-like imagination.
