Each week of Well+Good’s ReNew Year Challenge focuses on a different theme. Every Sunday, Lauren Ash, founder of Black Girl In Om, will give us a necessary jumpstart to get our minds right for the work ahead. For Week One, it’s all about detoxifying gently. Here, Ash provides a little insight on what detoxing—and a fresh start—can mean for our lives.

It’s a new year, which is a time that many of us reach for new beginnings. Before we jump into it, I encourage you to think about resets and detoxes in the same way that we think about our tech. Just like with your computer or your cell phone, every once in awhile you have to upgrade.

You’re worthy of this investment

Detoxing is something that requires commitment. I turned 30 in November. It was the three-year anniversary of Black Girl In Om. When I take a step back, there’s no arguing that there’s been a lot of growth and impact. The past three years have been such a great journey, both as an entrepreneur and a badass woman doing things.

But as this has all been happening, I’ve come to realize that I wasn’t prioritizing my own wellness and growth. When I took a step back and reevaluated, I needed to reaffirm to myself how important it was to invest in my mental health. I firmly wanted to disrupt that narrative that it’s impossible to be fully whole, a personal spiritual being, and an entrepreneur. By spending time on me, I’m already seeing the benefits in my life. You need to firmly believe that you are worth your own energy in order to fully embrace this restart.

You’re going to set some new boundaries

Detoxing enables you to get deeper spiritually and emotionally. When you get deeper, you also have the power to start and set new boundaries. For instance: I’ve been setting these communication boundaries with people by letting certain people and things go. Yes, there are always awkward parts in the beginning. I wonder, “Will I be perceived as mean or that I’m better than someone?” But at the end of the day, it’s important to see what you will and won’t let into your sphere. As you establish these new boundaries, whether they be within communication or perhaps the things you say “yes” to, don’t feel guilty. Instead, be proud of yourself for pushing your comfort zone.

This detox isn’t necessarily over after five weeks

Yes, (Re)New Year is a five-week program. But here’s the thing: Many of us have this habit of developing rhythms that aren’t useful. Sometimes, we don’t realize these rhythms are insignificant or unimportant until we press pause. (Re)New Year gives you a chance to pick up healthy habits, but then let’s take it a step further. Going forward, what I would offer as a more regular rhythm—one that I’ve recently adopted myself—is the monthly rhythm of the moon.

As women, we have a 28-day rhythm internally that we can turn to more frequently to reflect on what is and isn’t working. Now that you’re in the right frame of mind: As you begin to hone in on new healthy, positive patterns, ask yourself what your energy and emotional cycles are. We don’t always have to wait until December or January to press that reset button. But now that we’re here, we can commit to honing in on a more frequent rhythm for positive growth going forward—together.
