7 ways to celebrate National Yoga Month this September

We picked the best ways to celebrate National Yoga Month, many of them free.
Wanderlust 2011 NYC
Wanderlust in the City, Summer 2011

September is National Yoga Month, which means that all over the city, studios, teachers, and yoga brands have been busy coming up with many celebratory ways to get you on the mat.

This translates into 30 days full of special events and classes—many of which are free.

And the back-to-school timing couldn’t be better: Preserve what summer relaxation you may have gained by channeling it into some serious yoga bliss.

Here are seven ways to celebrate National Yoga Month this September:

1. Lululemon’s Gospel of Sweat

Slide into a church pew for Lululemon’s first Gospel of Sweat event at historic Riverside Church in Morningside Heights. A roster of big name yogis (and fitness stars) will preach the yogic gospel from the pulpit, TED-talk style. Asanas not included. Friday, September 7 at 6:00—9:00 p.m., Free with RSVP to rsvp@aocnetwork.com.

2. Wanderlust Yoga in the City

Wanderlust brings its one-day Yoga in the City festival to Pier 63 on the Hudson for the second time, and this year’s celebration includes a long list of beloved New York teachers—Elena Brower, Schuyler Grant, Dana Flynn, Chrissy Carter, and more. Plus, of course, music, dancing, and performances. Sunday, September 9, at 1:30 p.m. & 4:00 p.m., Free with RSVP, www.wanderlustfestival.com

3. The 9/11 Yoga Practice: Healing with Peace, Balance, and Remembrance

Elena Brower brings her healing touch to this outdoor memorial class. Hosted by Stonehenge NYC and Reflections Yoga, the event benefits the Uniformed Firefighters Association’s Widow’s and Children’s Fund. Tuesday, September 11, 6–8:00 p.m., $10 suggested donation, healwithyoga.eventbrite.com

4. NamasDAY at Exhale

Exhale hosts free yoga classes at their studios throughout the day with star teachers like Stefanie Eris and Issac Pena, and a “yoga bash” with DJs, giveaways, and goodie bags in the evening. Thursday, September 20, Free, www.exhalespa.com/namasday

5. Yoga Night at Citi Field

Take your yoga out to the ballgame at Pure Yoga’s second annual Yoga Night at Citi Field. After a 45-minute class with Kay Kay Clivio, watch the Mets take on the Phillies. Monday, September 26, yoga at 5:40, game at 7:10 $33, www.mets.com/yoga

6. National Yoga Month with Athleta

Starting September 1, Athleta’s two uptown stores (and those across the country) will host daily yoga activities, online giveaways, and free in-store yoga classes every Saturday.
