We kicked off a 10-week training plan with City Coach founder and top running coach Jonathan Cane in March, and lo and behold, the Brooklyn Half-Marathon it was designed for is already here. (Gulp!)

And while Cane has been holding my hand throughout the training—since I’m new to running and all of the aha! moments and aches it entails—on race day, like the other 18,000 people who show up, I’ll be going solo.

So, I asked Cane a few questions about the final distance runs leading up to race day (should I see what I can do??) and how to pace myself at the race once the gun goes off. Check out his surprising answers. —Lisa Elaine Held
