Holistic remedies for bad breathEveryone needs to pop in a breath mint now and then, especially after eating a smelly meal (hello, garlic knots!). But there are times when that nasty taste in your mouth lingers, leaving your mouth smelling anything but minty fresh.

“In some cases, it’s just a case of bacteria getting lodged in existing cavities, in the gums and on the top of your mouth,” Dr. Laura Torrado, a New York City dentist. “These degrade amino acids and thus produce foul-smelling volatile sulfur compounds,” she said.

She further explained that bad breath, or halitosis, can originate not only in the mouth but in the throat, sinuses and stomach. So when a mint and your toothpaste don’t eliminate the odor, these at-home remedies may be the solution for you.

Brush your tongue with baking soda.
Along with brushing and flossing your teeth, Dr. Lindsey Duncan, celebrity nutritionist to Marc Jacobs and Demi Moore, advised brushing the back of your tongue with baking soda. “Baking soda is extremely alkaline and removes most of the foul and toxic acid that resides in the mouth, throat and even the stomach, which creates the bad breath,” he told AOL Health. “By changing the pH balance of the mouth quickly, you will notice a dramatic and immediate effect.” If you’d like to use a cleaning tool, you can check out the DenTeck Tongue Cleaner ($4.49, www.cvs.com) or the Supersmile Flexible Tongue Cleaner ($22 for six, www.supersmile.com), an oral health line that’s popular among many celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Kelly Ripa, Justin Timberlake and Johnny Depp.
