How to survive in the wild…or the Hamptons

Could knowing how to navigate without a compass help you avoid suffocating crowds in the Hamptons this summer? If so, you’re in luck.

Made-over Montauk resort Gurney’s has been repositioning itself as a wellness destination over the past year, with on-site Row House classes over the summer, a partnership with Suja juice to offer green blends to guests, and retreats hosted by cool wellness brands like Exhale and Yoga for Bad People.

This year, they’re raising the bar with their “2015 Reboot” program that will further expand the hotel’s fitness offerings, through events with Lululemon, Brick CrossFit…and TV survivalist Bear Grylls.

Grylls’ “Survival Academy” will take place from February 28–March 1 and May 1–2 and will teach you the backwoods life skills necessary for self-rescue, like how to “start a fire, purify water, catch, prepare, and eat wild food, navigate without a compass, and avoid hypothermia.”

So, you know, next time you’re surfing Ditch Plains, you can catch your lunch without ever leaving your board, and then light your own bonfire without running home for matches. —Lisa Elaine Held
