Breast cancer awareness without cancer-causing chemicals

Dozens of big-deal beauty brands donate money to breast cancer research yet contain the chemicals potentially linked to the disease. Who feels good about that?

Unvarnished nail polish: SpaRitual is free of DBP, toluene, and formaldehydes, and raises money for Living in Pink, a cancer research non-profit

Everything is pink in October: Blenders, M&Ms, football jerseys, Smart Water bottles. No industry is exempt from showing their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Unfortunately, the marketing of this month dilutes a worthwhile health message. A bucket of KFC chicken might be pink in October, but fast-food linked to obesity raises your risk for breast cancer year-round.

Cosmetic companies provide one of the biggest contradictions. While big-deal beauty brands stamp ribbons on everything from eye shadow to shampoo, they continue to manufacture products full of potentially cancer-causing chemicals like parabens and phthalates.

Fortunately lots of natural beauty brands that don’t use these ingredients also donate proceeds from their products to fight breast cancer. So you can feel good about where your money is going. Here are five favorites:

Juara Antioxidant Turmeric Mask

Juara: Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask—named for the cancer-fighting botanical it contains. $39. The Indonesian-inspired beauty brand gives 10% of proceeds of its sale to benefit Cancer and Careers.

Red Flower: Japanese Peony Moisturizing Body Lotion. $24. 100% of the profits will be donated to Cancer and Careers.

Josie Maran: GOGO Instant Natural Volume Argan Mascara. $22. For every mascara purchased, up to 5,000, Josie Maran will donate a mascara to a City of Hope cancer patient or survivor. After 5,000 have been donated, $1 for each additional purchase will go to City of Hope‘s research, education and treatment programs, with a $25,000 minimum donation.

Acure Organics Body Lotion

Acure Organics: All products. $1 for each product purchased will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and $2 per product if you purchase them at Spirit Beauty Lounge, which sells the line and is currently matching the donation. Kristy Guerra founded Acure Organics to help raise awareness and money for breast cancer research, so it’s a company cause year-round.

Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup: Phoenix Sugar&Butter Lip Exfoliator. $24. $2 from each sale will be donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer. Jane Iredale also launched an initiative called Rise Above with Love, which showcases the stories of individuals touched by breast cancer.
