Since it opened in 2009, Work Train Fight has increased its size four times. And while it started as a personal-training-only gym, the Noho fitness facility’s latest expansion this January added a group fitness room, where owner Alberto Ortiz introduced a new line of boxing-based boot-camp classes.

We tried “Box n Work,” one of the boxing/kickboxing variations offered. The co-ed class started with a warm-up of jumping rope and standing punches, and then Ortiz revealed the pièce de résistance—a retractable rail of punching bags. We alternated punching the bags (with gloves) and working one-on-one with Ortiz (with pads on his hands). Then, we ended with a strength-training portion with kettlebells, weight lifting, and ab and butt sculpting. Cue “Eye of the Tiger.”

The class was a seriously intense mix of cardio and strength training. Instead of the polish and pizazz of Barry’s, you get the adrenaline rush that comes with working out alongside buff dudes (and punching the hell out of a bag). Think grit, not glam. You will, however, feel welcome. “We love boxing but we’re not an intimidating place,” says Ortiz. “Our focus is fitness, not knocking people out.” And personal attention abounds, since classes max out at 14.

Who’s it good for? The overstressed and out of shape. You can tackle both issues in this class.
