Is 2014 the year you round out your wellness habits to include more giving and less getting? (This is not about the $5 you give Starbucks every day to get your grande latte.)

“Longtime soul sisters” and yoga luminaries Dana Flynn and Elena Brower are co-teaching a class in New York City next week that can help you practice your yoga on and off the mat.

On Friday, January 10, the duo are raising awareness about Women for Women International, a non-profit organization that benefits women in eight war-torn countries, from Afghanistan to Rwanda.

“We’re passionate about Women For Women and about being a physical and spiritual forklift for these women devastated by war,” says Flynn, who’s hoping attendees will become inspired to sponsor a woman in the program for $30 a month. “Let’s face it, we’re all in this together. It’s yoga in loving action.” The funds help give women tools to improve their economic life, support to heal, and become powerful leaders in their own communities, she says.

As well as sense of do-gooderism, during the event you’ll receive “delicious” asana, meditation, and satsang. And Brower will be selling her natural perfume, GIVEscent, and giving a portion of proceeds to the organization.

And it’s not just the women in the program who Flynn and Brower are hoping to help thrive: “I hope that New York women and yogis will share [their sponsee’s] journey, feel her truth, and encourage her,” says Flynn. “It’s in giving that we transform.”

Soul Sister Benefit Mash UP with Elena Brower and Dana Flynn, January 10, 7–9 p.m., $30/$40 at door, at Laughing Lotus, 636 Sixth Ave., at 19th St., 3rd floor (entrance is on 19th St., behind Sports Authority), www.nyc.laughinglotus.com
