Taking a look back at 2016? So is supermodel (and Well+Good’s Wellness Council memberElle Macpherson—and she’s sharing the best health and wellness intel she’s gathered over the past 12 months with you.

As I look back on 2016, there are some definite highlights: the habits that have served me best, advice I’ve gotten, “a-ha” moments, and other wellness milestones.

But when I think about what really made the biggest impact on me—in terms of health, fitness, beauty, and happiness—a few things stood out, head and shoulders above the rest.

So here’s what I’m thankful for in 2016—in particular, these four things that kept me feeling great throughout the year.

1. Plant-based weeks

On a recent trip to The Ranch at Live Oak in Malibu I discovered my body responds really well to a plant-based diet. So my new thing is to do a plant-based week at the change of every season or before a shoot, as a way of cleansing my body.

2. A yoga and meditation routine

I discovered yoga in a new and exciting way this year. I met Pip Roberts in the Maldives and she introduced me to a different way of approaching yoga—new to me, anyway! It’s called Strala Yoga (founded by Tara Stiles), and it’s about natural movement and your body being in the right place for you at that time.

I’m also thankful for my meditation toolbox. I practice mindfulness daily at 5 a.m. before the rest of the house wakes, and each day I focus on a particular quality or value that I would like to improve. I’m more centered and find situations less stressful now that meditation is part of my regular routine.

I love to have a program mapped out—if the plan is there, it’s harder for me to find a reason to skip it that day. If you’re starting out, there is a lot of material out there about meditation—Russell Simmons, for example, has some interesting thoughts.

3. Better—and longer—sleep

A new priority of mine is to get my seven hours of sleep a night—not only does it help me feel restored, but it also means means that I’m at my optimum every day. I have a bedtime ritual, which includes drinking our Sleep Welle Fortified Calming Tea every night. I’ve also discovered the lovely power of aromatherapy—it all helps me relax, wind down, and easily drift off into a much-needed deep sleep.

4. A new exercise philosophy

I turned 52 this year and realized I needed to increase what I was doing. So instead of going for 45 minutes, I now workout for one hour in the morning, and do something extra in the evening—usually a walk after dinner. I believe that muscle tone decreases as we age, so some weight training is beneficial too—I try for 15 minutes a day as part of my one-hour workout, doing weight-bearing plank, push-up, and sit-up exercises. It’s a great way to keep the muscles strong!
