When thinking about eucalyptus, it's easy for your brain to skip back to kindergarten fun facts about it being a koala's favorite tree, but when it comes to eucalyptus oil benefits, the plant gives us so much more than wholesome pictures of cute marsupials. The main ingredient in eucalyptus oil, which comes from steam distilling the leaves of the eucalyptus tree, is called cineole or eucalyptol. The ingredient has a host of benefits and has been used by Aboriginal Australians for centuries as part of religious and cultural rituals and ceremonies and as a natural remedy against wounds, infections, sore muscles, and colds. Today the oil is best known for having active compounds that help to clear the respiratory tract and thin mucus, having antimicrobial and pain relieving properties, and also having the aromatherapeutic ability to help clear and energize the mind, explains Amy Galper, founder of NYC's first Aromatherapy School and author of the 2 bestselling books: The Ultimate Guide to Aromatherapy and Plant-Powered Beauty.

When it comes to how exactly to get eucalyptus oil benefits, the list is long. If you're feeling congested or have a cough, try putting two drops into a bowl of boiling water, draping a towel over your head, and inhaling the vapor to clear your sinuses and release mucus build up. When dealing with brain fog or lack of focus, add five drops to a diffuser and let the aroma fill your room. Because the oil can help clear your airways and allow more oxygen into your lungs, this can help boost mental clarity and energy levels. You can even add one drop to your shampoo to stimulate your scalp and prevent dandruff. And finally, for sore muscles, blend eucalyptus oil with a carrier oil like jojoba, almond, olive, or sunflower and then rub it into the pain point. Galper recommends using 3 drops of eucalyptus oil to one tablespoon of carrier oil, when using it on your skin.

There are several different species of Eucalyptus trees which each produce a different smelling eucalyptus essential oil. When it comes to eucalyptus oil benefits, Galper recommends opting for either eucalyptus globulus or eucalyptus radiata, which are often the most readily available. The eucalyptus globulus species tends to be stronger and more medicinal smelling, while the eucalyptus radiata is slightly softer and sweeter. She also cautions against applying the oil directly onto the skin or using it on children under five years old, the elderly, or those who suffer from asthma or immune complications.
