11 Fun Online Classes to Take for Free When Boredom Strikes

Without the option to go out and spend time with friends and family, you may be finding it hard to fill your free time with activities you genuinely want to do. If you're feeling up for it, now is the perfect time to learn a new skill or brush up on an old one. There are tons of fun online classes you can take right now, and a lot of them are free.

In the last few weeks, we've seen fitness and ballet instructors take to leading online courses, and the same thing is happening across a broad spectrum of interests. If it's something you're interested in doing, there's probably a class to teach you how to do it.

Fun online classes to take for free

1. Nikon School

The venerable camera brand offers 10 online classes centered around photography. You can all of them for free through April 30. Learn everything from the basics of your DSLR camera to the art of making a music video. While some classes take just 15 minutes to complete, others run more than an hour.

2. Disney Imagineering in a Box

Learn how to be an imagineer, the people responsible for the creation, design, and construction of Disney theme parks. Offered through the Khan Academy, this class comprises 32 videos from Imagineers with interactive activities to give you the opportunity to dream and design a theme park experience.

3. Harvard University Science & Cooking

Audit this class taught by top chefs and Harvard researchers that explores how traditional and modernist cooking techniques can illuminate basic principles in chemistry, physics, and engineering. This is just one of 140 courses Harvard is offering to audit for free.

4. SCIENCE OF EXERCISE

If you're interested not just in breaking a sweat, but also in what's happening in your body when you exercise, this course is perfect. It's one of 100 courses Coursera is offering for free through May 31, among other classes that were already free.

5. MASTER GARDeNER SERIES: VEGETABLE GARDENING

Become a vegetable growing pro with this online class that only takes four to six hours to complete. This course teaches you how to select a proper garden site, prepare soil, plant vegetables, and identify common insect and disease problems.

6. FENDER GUITAR LESSONS

Learn how to play the guitar with three months of free access to Fender Play Through courses. The world-famous instrument company is offering three months of free access to bass and ukulele lessons.

7. MOMA FASHION AS DESIGN

Take this class from the Modern Museum of Art in New York City, which examines 70 garments and accessories from around the world to look closely at what we wear, why we wear it, how it’s made, and what it means. It's one of nine courses MoMA offers for free on Coursera.

8. Yale The Science of Well Being

This perennially popular course is essentially a crash-course on how to be happy. It engages you in a series of challenges designed to increase your own happiness and build more productive habits.

9. The Art of Kitchen Improv

If you love cooking, but have a hard time coming up with recipes on your own that aren't basic, this is the course for you. It's taught through the Milk Street Cooking School as one of 13 classes that are free through April 30.

10. Feng Shui Your Home Office

11. Writing for Self-Discovery
