Gaiam TV Friday: David Wolfe’s Superfood Secrets to Optimal Health

Happy Gaiam TV Friday! Every Friday, with the help of Gaiam TV’s roster of wellness superstars, we tackle an urban wellness challenge.

Problem: You’re caving to the 4:00 cookie craving with a Starbucks run—and you promised yourself you wouldn’t.

Solution: Food visionary David Wolfe on how to sneak more superfoods into your diet instead.

Well+Good caught up with raw food guru David Wolfe for some solid superfood advice. And for the next three days you can watch Wolfe’s entire Superfood Secrets to Optimal Health for free, normally available only to Gaiam TV subscribers.

And if you haven’t heard about Gaiam TV, it’s kind of like a yoga, fitness, spirituality, and wellness-oriented Netflix and they offer 10-day free trials.

W+G: What are some easy, healthy options that cure a 4:00 sugar craving?

DW: I love dried mulberries and goji berries (a complete protein source with zero fat!). Pumpkin seeds are a great protein source that also help support healthy digestion. Cucumber gives us a sense of fullness and satiation with almost no calories. Or for a mid-afternoon pick me up, a raw, organic superfood chocolate bar (my favorite is Sacred Chocolate) is fine!

W+G: Yay, to chocolate. Is there something unexpected we wouldn’t think to eat at our desks that’s a must?

DW: Another super-winner snack food: chlorella tablets. Eat them like you are on a spaceship. They have a really interesting taste and texture, plus incredible protein. In my book, they’re number one in chlorophyll, rich in minerals, and great for stress.

W+G: Is there anything that boosts brain power or that really fires you up?
DW: I love superfood smoothies. I can make one in less than 2 minutes. This one, my Spicy CocoChocolate Blast, contains superfoods with real wholesome calories that turn on our brain and activate genius!

Spicy CocoChocolate Blast

1 tablespoon raw cacao powder or 5-6 cacao beans
1 teaspoon Maca
1-2 teaspoon(s) honey (still the best sweetener ever! And a longevity food too!)
1 tablespoon reishi mushroom powder (open 4-5 reishi capsules, if you cannot find bulk powder)
1 liter coconut water
1/2 cup of almond milk (sometimes spelled “mylk”
1/4-1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
