Healthy surfers show off their “Surfer DNA” for charity

Surfer DNAThe subjects of photographer Alberto Guglielmi’s new series live and breathe surfing so much that they’re literally sprouting fins—or at least they appear to be. “The board becomes an extension of one’s self, the means by which they make a connection to the water, both physically and spiritually,” Guglielimi explains.

Surfer DNA debuted this week in Soho, as part of Waves for Water’s Campaign for Hurricane Sandy Relief in the Rockaways. And while the photos act as visual metaphors for each surfer’s connection to the sport, the project also demonstrates the surfing world coming together to rebuild the beaches they love and the communities that surround and support them.

Here, we highlight some of the fitness- and wellness-world stars featured in the show. —Lisa Elaine Held
