Wanderlust Vermont is just a few weeks away on June 21, and with just a few exceptions, most of the amazing yoga classes and events still have plenty of space for your mat. Stratton’s hotels, however, are short on beds.
The solution? For the first time, the yoga-and-music festival is offering camping. Since subjecting yourself to the elements, serious darkness (like no street lights), and silence punctured by coyote howls instead of sirens may seem, well, terrifying, we tapped the expertise of veteran festival camper and fab Brooklyn- and LA-based stylist Lauren Shields.
Shields has been setting up camp at the Michigan Womyns Festival for 13 years, and her tent tips are so functional and stylish that you’ll forget you’ve even left your city apartment (especially since the tent is probably the same size).
Here are Lauren Shields’ six tips for tricking out your tent:
1. Hang a hand mirror in the center of the tent, and hang a lantern in front of it. The reflection in the mirror will magnify the light and make the tent brighter at night and provide excellent overhead light.
2. Put an inexpensive throw rug in front of your tent to wipe off your feet and prevent you from tracking dirt/sand into your tent. For extra dirt-free sleeping, put another throw rug in front of your sleeping bag/air mattress to wipe off your feet before getting under the covers.
3. Milk crates can be your best friend. Stack them and secure with duct tape for shelving. Turn upside down and use as a seat or bedside table.
4. Strap your headlamp (light facing in) around a gallon jug of water— it’ll make the whole jug glow illuminating the room and also help you find your water.
5. Tie a rope or clothesline from corner to corner inside your tent to hang your clothes and keep them wrinkle-free.
6. Solar-powered lawn lights can be a great accessory to help identify your tent at night and provide subtle, ambient light. —Lisa Elaine Held
