Princes William and Harry are notoriously private when it comes to talking about their mother’s untimely death. But recently, both royals opened up about their grief, with William’s wife Kate Middleton, in a new video for Heads Together, their new mental health campaign.

It’s perhaps the princes’ most honest interview ever, and shows that no one is immune to depression—even if you’re an heir to the throne. The royals join a growing list of celebrities who have revealed their own struggles with mental health—like Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga, and Kristen Bell—which is taking some of the shame and stigma out of all-too-common struggles.

“I always thought to myself, what’s the point of bringing up the past? And when you start thinking like that, it can be really damaging.”

“I always thought to myself, what’s the point of bringing up the past?” Harry says in the video, adding that the brothers didn’t talk enough about Princess Diana’s death when they were young, but have discussed it more as adults—especially now, with this campaign.

“What’s the point in bringing up something that’s only going to make you sad? It ain’t gonna change it, it ain’t gonna bring her back. And when you start thinking like that, it can be really damaging,” Harry says.

William shares that he didn’t think he was emotional until he became a dad: “It really does put your own [feelings] and life into perspective, and it’s been interesting understanding why I get upset about certain things and why some things affect me.”

As for Middleton, her experience as a social worker exposed her to a number of mental health issues, which in turn led to forming Heads Together with William and Harry. It’s all about “coming together to find a common theme and to show people how to have what we are calling ‘simple conversations,’ and starting those conversations—which is often the hardest bit, really,” she says. Harry adds that a simple chat can serve as a type of medicine for people who are struggling.

Considering that the World Health Organization declared depression the world’s most threatening mental health issue, the royal family couldn’t have picked a better cause to team up on. (And yes, we’ll say it: Mom would be proud.)
