How To Use the Last Full Moon of 2020 To Prep for a Total Energetic Refresh

The last full moon of 2020 is in Cancer and perfects at 10:28 p.m., ET, at 8° in the sign of home and family. This full moon brings emotion—it's in a water sign and squares Chiron, the wounded healer. We can expect it to bring an intense focus on feelings in their full force and range.

At the time of the full moon, Venus, the planet of love and beauty, conjoins the south node of past karmas in Sagittarius in opposition to the north node of fate in Gemini while squaring Neptune in Pisces. This mutable square intensifies the full moon even more, animating a need to be with what is while staying cautious of getting swept into the abyss of the fear of the unknown.

Mars's disseminating square to Pluto and the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction still in play means the energy of this full moon is intense, but likewise, its potential for clearing energy is profound. With a year full of trauma, pain, and hardship quickly coming to a close, our attention will ideally turn to forgiveness.

There are many reasons to feel angry. And, Mars at 26° of Aries, in a square to Pluto in Capricorn, will perhaps bring rage into an even more explicit focus. However, there's another option, too: humbly accepting things as they are and committing to making what we can better, even if just a tiny amount. By focusing on what you can do to improve your situation ever so slightly, you put the focus on your agency.

This last full moon of 2020 highlights a need for safety, security, and time with those whom we love.

This last full moon of 2020 highlights a need for safety, security, and time with those whom we love, and yet, given the intensity of this moment in the pandemic, many of us will be alone. It's important to remember that anger often shields grief, but grief gives way to a process to move through pain and find the humility to forgive the past so we can begin again. That said, please don't bypass anger. Feel it, but also understand what it's asking of you. Anger is a call to action to protect ourselves and acknowledge where we've been hurt.

Simultaneously, with the new year also starting this week, it's essential to hold tight to hope. The year ahead is very different than the one we are leaving behind. While it'll be far from perfect year, it stands to offer more ease, astrologically speaking.

New Year's Day brings with it the blessings of a Leo moon. A Leo moon encourages optimism, and despite the myriad challenges we currently face, there's so much to be optimistic about. We are completing a year that was ridden with hardship and are moving forward with the wisdom we gained.

But before we move forward, we must clarify where we've been and integrate what we learned. To that point, make this full moon a sacred moment for ritual to review the year. Carve out time during the last full moon of 2020 to journal and ponder the following questions:

  • What am I celebrating? What went well over the last year?
  • What did I hope to do or create that didn't come to fruition?
  • What am I grieving?
  • What do I need to release?
  • What and who do I want to forgive?
  • What did I learn?
  • What is my intuition guiding me to acknowledge and take action on now?
  • What does excellent self care look like now?
  • What changes do I most want to make to my mindset, life, and my lived reality?
  • What goal or dream do I most want to bring to fruition now?

Once you've answered these questions (or others that feel potent for you to consider), begin to think about your vision for the year ahead. If 2021 goes as well as it could, what will have happened? Who will you become? Consider the obstacles you face, and ask yourself how you can work with them or overcome them in the months ahead. And then start to craft an intention for the new year.

You may also want to do something to release the year via a fire ritual or space-clearing exercise that allows you to refresh your environment and set the tone for all you wish to conjure and experience in the year ahead. When crafting rituals, it's important to honor your spiritual practices, so think about what you can do to make a full moon ritual even more special for you. Have fun with it. Allow yourself to process your feelings. And then get ready, because 2021 is truly a fresh start!
