Lena Dunham’s Takedown of Diet Culture Is Seriously Epic

Lena Dunham definitely hasn't been silent in the first few months of Donald Trump's presidency, something she campaigned furiously against last year. But there's been one after-effect of her post-election hangover that she wishes everybody else would shut up about already: her weight loss.

A recent tabloid cover showed a photo of Dunham next to the headline "20 Slimdown Diet Tips Stars Are Using," and the Girls star and author posted it on her Instagram with a very detailed and tongue-in-cheek response with the same title—making it clear that it's nothing to celebrate.

"I don't want to be on this cover cuz it's diametrically opposed to everything I've fought my whole career for."

"I don't want to be on this cover cuz it's diametrically opposed to everything I've fought my whole career for," writes Dunham. "And it's not a compliment to me because it's not an achievement thanx."

The real reasons she's lost weight? Essentially, they're all health- and stress-related. First of all, Dunham lists some pre-existing conditions she deals with, like anxiety disorder (which results in constant nausea, she writes), "abdominal adhesions pinning ovary below uterus," and bladder spasms—some of which are connected to her struggle with endometriosis, which landed her in the hospital last week.

Then there's the toll that the election and the current administration is having on her (hello, triggers), which Dunham makes note of in tips such as "marching your ass off," "constant sweaty dreams of dystopian future," and "worrying ceaselessly about the health and safety of women you know and women you don't."

And she makes it totally clear that she's so over the people (and media outlets) that police other people's bodies when she asks, "Um, who the f cares?" So yes, Dunham may have lost weight, but not to wind up on the cover of a tabloid. She's not that kind of girl—and isn't giving up the body-positivity cause just because a number on a scale has changed.
