Kate Middleton isn’t the only secret-talent rich lady to join the royal family (hello, gallery-worthy photography!). Meghan Markle has a sneaky skill up her sleeve too: calligraphy.

In a 2013 interview, Markle—who was then still acting on Suits and had no idea she would be engaged to a literal prince a few years later—chatted about her impressive handwriting. “I went to an all-girls Catholic school for like six years during the time when kids actually had handwriting class,” she told Esquire. “I’ve always had a propensity for getting the cursive down pretty well.”

“What it evolved into was my pseudo-waitressing job when I was auditioning. I didn’t wait tables. I did calligraphy for the invitations for, like, Robin Thicke and Paula Patton’s wedding.” —Meghan Markle

But “pretty well” is actually a serious understatement: She got so insanely good at calligraphy that some high-profile clients hired her to pen some pretty official documents: “What it evolved into was my pseudo-waitressing job when I was auditioning. I didn’t wait tables. I did calligraphy for the invitations for, like, Robin Thicke and Paula Patton’s wedding,” she says. “I used to do it for Dolce & Gabbana‘s celebrity correspondence over the holidays. I would sit there with a little white tube sock on my hand so no hand oils got on the card, trying to pay my bills while auditioning.”

Markle says she’s always been a fan of a handwritten note and wants to try and keep that alive in the digital age. So who knows? Those who are lucky enough to score an invite to her wedding to Prince Harry might receive a beautifully written thank-you note in the near future.

This is Meghan Markle’s go-to smoothie recipe—and it sounds delicious. Or, find out which twice-a-day wellness practice that keeps her centered.
