New York’s first Bollywood fitness studio to open this fall

Bollywood dance-inspired workout Doonya will open its very own flagship studio location this September, in New York’s fitness-packed Flatiron District.

The brand, created by Priya Pandya and Kajal Desai, has been operating its classes out of rented dance rehearsal spaces and gyms in New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, and D.C. since its debut, and also churns out DVDs and online videos for at-home workouts.

Its new home, currently under construction, will occupy 2500 square feet on Broadway at 27th Street. “The key word for us is for it to feel like home for Doonya Doers: warm, open, bright and energetic are words that come to mind when in the space,” Pandya says. “There will be a touch of Indian-inspired-ness to the space, but we’re keeping it pretty modern, sleek, and simple.”

Pandya says it will be followed by a Houston studio opening soon, with an expected 65 operating locations (a mix of owner-operated and franchised) by 2018.  That’s a whole lot of “Bollywood taps”—and endorphins. —Lisa Elaine Held
