One Billion Rising takes over the city today

Want to add some meaning to your February 14? One Billion Rising is hosting dance events around the city today that call attention to violence against women.

One Billion Rising

Today, actor, do-gooder Eve Ensler and her V-Day organization are celebrating February 14 by hosting “One Billion Rising,” a worldwide movement aimed at calling attention to (and ultimately ending) violence against women.

The movement includes dance celebrations in 200 countries, and New Yorkers will be participating at different events around the city.

From 2:30 to 8:00 p.m., you can watch dancers in the windows at ABC Carpet & Home and then stop by a 6:00 p.m. Macarena Flash Mob in Union Square Park. The big event takes place at Hammerstein Ballroom at 7:00 p.m. tonight, where DJs will be joined by celebs like Donna Karan and Rosario Dawson, and tickets are free.

If you can’t deal with the cheesiness of hearts and candy, it may be a great way to add some meaning to the day of love.
