This Week Marks the Unofficial Start of Summer—Here’s How the Universe Wants You to Prep for It

As we come to and move through the last week of May, it's time to ready yourself for the seasonal shift ahead. With the holiday weekend celebrating the unofficial start of summer in full roar (social-distance-style, of course), there's no time like the present to make the changes that are necessary to thrive in the seasonal shift. After all, with heat and humidity soon to set in, this week is about planning ahead and adjusting your self-care routine appropriately. This is what Gemini season is about, in fact—leaning into transition. Just as nature is in full bloom all around us, we, too, are blooming in our own lives.

As we experience increased exposure to daylight, ideally, your health routines will adjust. Everything from the body lotion you are using to your bedtime may shift. Besides that, the welcomed heat of summer can make way for pitta aggravation—a classic ayurvedic symptom of summer—which may include unsavory side effects like digestive issues and increased anger. So I encourage you to introspect about how you handle heat and what needs to shift now so you can take advantage of the start of summer.

For example, maybe now's the time to transition your afternoon workouts to the morning, so you get your sweat in before it gets too hot. Furthermore, exposure to sunlight increases vitamin D, which may suppress melatonin production, so perhaps you consider checking in with your caffeine habit. Additionally, in light of the heat, make sure to prioritize your hydration with water-rich foods and mindful H20 consumption.

Aside from the regular seasonal changes that summer brings, since international borders remain closed, and many of us are still operating with stay-at-home orders in place, it's critical to think about how you'll cultivate your joy this summer, despite the social realities that come with safely living during a pandemic.

For example, as you retire the flannel sheets from winter, maybe you want to upgrade your bedding, so you have a hotel feel in your bedroom. Or perhaps you want to buy a new recipe book and try fresh meals at home to satisfy your craving for restaurant food. And of course, if sipping cocktails and mocktails while out is part of your ritual for celebrating and unwinding, consider investing in ingredients you need to make something delicious and unique at home.

June is right around the corner and will pack a powerful astrological punch with eclipse season and Mercury going retrograde on June 18.

No matter what works in alignment with your personal situation, thinking through these things now helps set the tone for June, which is right around the corner and will pack a powerful astrological punch. The sixth month of the year brings eclipse season, and Mercury goes retrograde on June 18. So taking acute care of yourself and the mundane details of life now sets you up for success later.

To support you with this, Mars and Uranus make a sextile on Monday, encouraging breakthroughs in how you mobilize your energy on behalf of your goals. Intuitive insights and creative thinking may help you problem-solve and plan.

Come Tuesday, as you re-acclimate to work, think about the new moon intentions you set with the new moon in Gemini last week. Now a waxing crescent moon, it provides a moment to mobilize your plans. Speaking of the moon, she moves into Leo on Wednesday, adding buoyancy and lightheartedness to the week. To make the most of this, plan to have a bit of fun midweek, especially given that Mercury shifts into Cancer on Thursday. Mercury in Cancer allows you to feel into what you need to make your home feel ready at the start of summer for the upcoming months. Use your intuition and your emotions to guide your choices.

Once the moon moves into Virgo on Friday (it will stay in Virgo until Sunday at 10:37 a.m., EST), take some time to tackle chores and review your health plan for June. The waxing quarter moon occurs at 11:37 p.m. EST on Friday, in Virgo, marking the halfway point between the last new moon and the upcoming full moon in Sagittarius, which is also a lunar eclipse. Eclipses can be startling, draining even. Taking care now helps you to prep for what's ahead. Tune into this moment and take stock. How are you? What do you need?

But in general, the week ahead asks you to lean into the extended daylight, ready yourself for heat, and cultivate your joy. Enjoy it.
