After You’re Done Using This Sustainable Straw, You Can Eat It—Seriously

As the world is ditching plastic and shifting to more sustainable straw options, plenty of people are going for biodegradable paper or reusable metal, silicone, or glass versions. One genius alternative no one has thought of yet: a straw you can eat once you're done using it. Well, until now, that is.

A few years ago, the company LOLIWARE released the first (and, so far, the only) completely edible cup that provides a plastic-free drinking experience, and now they're coming out with straws, too. Created by industrial designers Chelsea Briganti and Leigh Ann Tucker with a team of food scientists and sustainability experts, the LOLISTRAW can either be eaten or composted: In fact, it goes from straw to soil in 60 days or less.

And get this: It can even be reused once dried. While it has the feel of a plastic straw and can last up to 24 hours in a beverage, it's made of a non-GMO seaweed-based material, contains natural flavor extracts, and gets its color from fruit and veggies.

The straw has already raised more than $80,000 on Kickstarter, and there are seven flavors in the works for you to take a big sip (or bite!) out of: citrus, vanilla dust, rose quartz, heliotrope, sparkling ocean, charcoal, and air. (Intriguing, right?) Currently, the straws are available for pre-order and are set to ship out in October—so it won't be long before you're drinking your iced coffees out of seaweed.
