The Tempur-Pedic Topper That Totally Transformed My Cheap Mattress Is Currently 40% Off

My mattress was one of my first major purchases. I had just finished college and moved to New York City to start grad school. Understandably, I didn't want to spend much so I got the cheapest one I could find with the best reviews. For $200, I got a pretty great mattress. I was shocked by how good it felt for the price, but adding the Tempur-Topper Supreme has taught me that there's always room for improvement. Now through Monday, January 17, the topper is 40 percent off, allowing you to save over $100.

Tempur-Topper Supreme — $180.00 to $270.00

Originally $299 to $449, now $180 to $270.

The Tempur-Topper Supreme has three inches of cloud-like foam material and a cool-to-the-touch removable cover. I have the full size, which typically goes for $350, but it's currently on sale for $210.

At first, I wasn't sure that I was going to like it. My current mattress has a medium-firm feel, and I crave that level of support. The Tempur-Topper is super soft—dare I say, squishy. Which, like, yes—foam is squishy, but this is really squishy. When my boyfriend and I first got into my bed, we worried that it was too soft. And then we both fell asleep. At 3 p.m. On a Monday. (I wasn't working that day, but still, it felt dramatic.)

Sleeping with the squishy topper on my firm mattress is akin to drifting off on a layer of structured marshmallows. In true Tempur-Pedic form, it contours to your body and makes getting into bed feel luxurious. That being said, I think I only love it so much because it's topping an already sturdy mattress. I love melting into the super-soft material, but if it were any thicker than three inches I think I'd go from feeling cushy support to sinking discomfort and my low back would hate me.

If you prefer soft mattresses, this should be music to your ears. If you already have a decently firm mattress and are okay with a medium-to-medium-firm feeling, this topper will do wonders. But if you like a mattress so stiff you feel like your weight barely makes a dent, you'll wanna skip this.

“A good mattress should gently support your whole body and keep your spine in a neutral position, no matter if you are laying on your back, side, or stomach,” says R. Alexandra Duma, DC, a sports chiropractor at New York City recovery and wellness studio FICS.

My winning mattress-topper combo lies at the intersection of support and comfort, which Michael Breus, PhD, a sleep expert and clinical psychologist, explains aren't the same.

"There’s a difference between comfort and support," says Dr. Breus. "Support is when your spine is aligned, which allows for your spine to re-hydrate and get all its nutrition for recovery."

The Tempur-Topper Supreme is amazing. The only downside is that the three inches it adds on top of my mattress make my fitted sheet creep up more often than usual. Test it out, keeping in mind you may decide to size up your sheets or look for ones with a deeper pocket.

As I type this article from my bed, I can say that my mattress has never felt so comfortable. If you're hoping to upgrade your mattress, but don't want to break the bank, don't sleep on it—you've found what you're looking for.
