This summer, Long Island City’s Brooklyn Grange will finally be able to explain its previously borough-confused name.
The enormous rooftop farm, which planted its first crops two years ago in Queens, is set to open a second location in Brooklyn—a 45,000-square-foot farm on the roof of Building No.3 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
The location will double the farm’s current acre and will supply local restaurants and residents with a variety of veggies—from heirloom tomatoes and herbs to peppers, kale, chard, eggplant, beans, cucumbers, and the farm’s signature “flavorful greens.”
As a green roof, it will also reduce storm water runoff. And, since its partially funded by a Green Infrastructure Grant from the city’s Department of Environmental Protection, it’ll work with the DEP to improve water quality in New York City.
“I hope its success encourages more local farmers and entrepreneurs to start their own rooftop farms,” said speaker Christine Quinn, a supporter, in a press release.
