Welcome to Wellness Confidential, our quick-fire interview series where we ask hard-hitting (okay, entertaining) wellness questions, lightning round-style.
This week we’re chatting with Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg, the founders of The Skimm, the daily e-mail helping millions of people stay up-to-date on the news. We caught up with the super busy duo, who just launched their first ever app, Skimm Ahead.
My most memorable sweaty moment
Carly Zakin: When we pitched a [venture capital fund] and they turned up the heat—literally—to see how we did under pressure. The answer was that we do in fact sweat when it is hot.
Danielle Weisberg: I like to go for long-ish runs on the weekends in the summer. For me, that means six miles on hills. I had a really hard work week and ran it in my fastest time yet this summer. It was a big win for me and showed how my mentality goes a long way in workouts.
Workout I’m currently obsessed with
CZ: I had a back injury and have been doing Pilates for almost 10 years. I do sessions with Victoria Torrie-Capan [and Lynann Escatel] at Pilates 66 in New York City. This isn’t a workout but as related to my back injury, I also go to an amazing muscle therapist named Claudia Chapel. She’s life-changing.
DW: I recently started training with Emily Cook Harris at Empowered. She has the amazing ability to push you to your breaking point but does it with a smile. I also love Flybarre. Glenn at the Chicago Old Town location pulses me into submission.
First thing I did when I woke up this morning
CZ: I realized I woke up cuddling my laptop. Then snoozed four times. Then got a chocolate croissant and all was right.
DW: Hit snooze. Tried to go back to sleep with my puppy. Then checked emails.
Last thing I did before I went to sleep
CZ: Watched Frasier on Netflix to fall asleep. Hence, why I woke up cuddling my laptop.
Most people don’t know this about me, but
CZ: My parents are named Barbi and Ken.
DW: I was on the Tufts University Equestrian Team my freshman year of college.
The one wellness trend you’ll never see me try
CZ: A fasting cleanse.
DW: Colonics. Don’t want to mess with that. Not my jam.
My mantra of the moment
CZ: What has to get done will get done. My mom has always said that to me, and I think of it all the time.
DW: I’ve been trying to live by the mantra of “Enjoy it.” It’s very easy to get bogged down in startup hours. I’m trying to focus more on the amount we learn each day and the beyond-cool things we’ve been able to experience on this wild ride.
I firmly believe that a woman can never have too many
CZ: Cashmere. Or shoes.
