Well+Good’s Survival Guide to Fashion’s Night Out

How to avoid the stampede this FNO

Last year, Fashion’s Night Out (FNO) was economic salve for the Recession-worn fashion industry first, and marketing event second. This year it feels like a pure marketing juggernaut, with seemingly every fashion and beauty related business participating. So how best to navigate the omnipresent freebie frenzy of FNO this Friday night without feeling cheap? We’ve put together our picks of the best beauty events around town.

Lululemon Brooklyn, 7:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Focus on inner beauty at Lululemon Brooklyn’s yoga-meets-shopping event. Before the party, join yoga-kirtan goddess Robin Pickering for an “alternative happy hour” yoga class from 6:30-7:30 p.m. (Please RSVP: brooklyn-store@lululemon.com). Then the store will re-open for shopping, “lululemonade” (for the few who haven’t drunk the Lulu Kool-aid yet) and complimentary massage. Nearby, the Brooklyn Lulu outpost will turn an open lot into a party space with a DJ, dancing and food and drink.
472 Bergen Street (the store) and the block between 5th Ave and Flatbush (the block party).

Korres Makeovers at last year's FNO

Korres Natural Products, 6:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Korres, the Greek skin-care company that started as a homeopathic pharmacy in Athens, invites FNOers to its detox bar serving antioxidant infused cocktails based on the brand’s skin-care fragrances (wild rose, pomegranate, thyme honey, and raspberry) and cupcakes “packed with natural ingredients.” The menu doesn’t scream wholesome, but their products are, so we think it’s worth a drive-by. Also expect complimentary Korres makeovers, eco make-up advice, and generous product samples.
110 Wooster St. (btw Prince & Spring); RSVP: 212-219-0683 or Woosterstreet@korresusa.com

Josie Maran at Sephora 5th Avenue, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Learn how to pose like Josie Maran at her Sephora event

Josie Maran, the former model who created an eponymous natural cosmetics line around argan oil, sashays into Sephora for an in-store photo shoot where she poses with you and you walk away with a signed print. More interesting are the mini-makeovers and camera-posing advice (we all need it), plus the giveaway. The first 100 customers will get Maran’s limited edition Argan Oil Color Stick in Cherry Popsicle.
Sephora, 597 5th Avenue (between West 48th and West 49th streets); 212-980-6534.

Bibhu Nail Salon featuring Zoya Nail Polish at the Plaza Hotel Shops, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Zoya’s one of our favorite non-toxic nail polishes and you can swing by for a walk-in mani (mostly just a polish change) at the Bibhu Nail Salon in the Plaza Hotel Shops on 58th Street at Fifth Avenue. They promise lots of fun freebies too.

And if you simply can’t deal with this Valentine’s Day for the fashion industry, you can opt out altogether by attending yoga expert and author Stephanie Syman’s reading.

Stefanie Syman, Author of The Subtle Body: The Story of Yoga in America, Friday September 10, 8:00 p.m.
Join Stefanie Syman as she reads from The Subtle Body (FSG), her terrific new history of yoga in America that’s a page-turning 300-page string of historical vignettes that flow easily like a vinyasa over the cast of characters (swamis and gurus, philosophers and starlets) who make up the flexy-bendy history of our city. The only fashionistas will be of the Hyde/Be Present/Lululemon variety.
Jaya Yoga Center, $15, 8:00 p.m., 1626 8th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11215, 718-788-8788
