Why everyone’s wearing skulls to the gym

Skulls have a new life in fitness fashion, where they're emblazoned on hoodies, workout tanks, and even yoga mats.

The skull may have starred on Alexander McQueen scarves and the cashmere sweaters of Lucien Pellat-Finet, but the must-have fashion motif has now clearly crossed over from high fashion into fitness fashion, creating a new life with the popular image of the, well, dead.

On the fitness scene, SoulCycle has taken the skull image most seriously—and creatively—stamping it onto any garment you can sweat in.

And now, everyone from your cycling instructor to the woman next to you in hot yoga—another place the skull’s been widely spotted—is rocking skulls on her banana, headband, tank, and tights.

While there’s no real meaning behind the skull pattern (except the obvious cool factor), its bit of hard-edged toughness seems suited to getting us through a heart-pounding sweatfest of 100 RPM bike sprints or 100-degree asanas.

Check out these ways to wear and work out with skulls that might just turn heads. —Melisse Gelula
