Yoga for night owls, and the overworked

Strala Yoga, the NoHo studio owned by Tara Stiles, just added an 8:45 p.m. class to the schedule, meaning that overworked yogis still have a shot of squeezing in an after-work class.

“A lot of our regulars were asking for an after-work class,” says Stiles. “They can’t make a 7:00 class but they want to wind their day down with yoga.” The hour-long session combines the Strala’s signature strong, vigorous practice with a recovery aspect. “We call it Stro-lax, because it’s simultaneously strong and relaxing,” jokes Stiles, whose new studios can hold up to 100 people.

So far, the late class is only offered on Tuesday evening with teacher Jenn Pesce. But it prompted a Well+Good inquiry: How many New York City studios are catering to ten-hour work-day New Yorkers? (And who needs yoga more?)

Jivamukti offers a 9:00 p.m. yoga class every single weeknight. The Thursday class gets quite full, and other nights it attracts about a dozen students. Laughing Lotus offers a “midnight yoga” class from 10:00 p.m.–midnight on Friday night, and most other nights there’s an 8:30 p.m. class.

Surprisingly the mega-studios, YogaWorks and Pure, with their dozens of daily classes, don’t have many classes for night owls. But they offer what the boutique studios don’t: lots of 6:00 a.m. classes for early risers.
