Meet Breakfast Criminals’ founder and score her smoothie bowl secrets

Ksenia Avdulova, of Breakfast Criminals, kinda makes wandering into the cereal aisle look like a felony. The superfood-laden bowls that adorn her popular Instagram account and food blog have inspired a healthy-breakfast renaissance. And when I met the New Yorker on a bench in Madison Square Park one fall morning, she demonstrated how easy it was to whip them up, too.

“You can ask questions while I prepare,” Avdulova said, as she stood up and started taking mason jars and heart-shaped bowls out of her wellness-version of a Mary Poppins bag.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetThe mason jar was filled with gluten-free oats and chia seeds that had been soaked over night, and blended with pitaya, banana, and spinach. She poured the mix into a bowl and topped it with a strip of homemade granola—made with Brazil nuts, buckwheat, raw cacao, and coconut.

Avdulova works as a social media consultant in the fashion industry by day, but for Breakfast Criminals she interviews wellness influencers and Instagram celebs over breakfast and writes breakfast bowl recipes. Her brand blew up in February 2013 when she started gramming swoon-worthy breakfast smoothies in her signature heart-shape bowls.

“I found a heart bowl at a discount store around the time I started my Instagram account. I was recently single and saw it in the corner all by itself,” says Avdulova knowingly. “It sort of became a sign for me to start your day with love—and a nourishing breakfast prepared with love. It might sound crazy, but I taste a difference when I’m preparing it mindfully versus in a rush.”

The heart-shape bowls have become so popular that they’ll soon be available for sale on her site. And now, almost two years later, she also has an e-book of recipes and teaches master classes at SweetGreen for followers looking to start their mornings just like her.

Want a head start? Avdulova shares three breakfast recipes that will shake up your mornings (Raw Chocolate Bomb anyone?)—in an awesome, super healthy, and loving way. Read them now… —Molly Gallagher
