Los Angeles, prepare for the summer of “like.”

Flower Child, a healthy fast-casual café that specializes in some of the most Insta-friendly dishes around—bowls and toasts included—is going to inspire a cascade of double-taps when it opens in Santa Monica on June 14.

The new kid in town has a pretty strong pedigree; its big sister is True Food Kitchen, the rapidly expanding chain whose menu is based on Dr. Andrew Weil’s anti-inflammatory diet. (Weil has no connection to this new brand.)

Like the three other Flower Child locations in Phoenix, AZ (which have been quietly cropping up for the past two years), the LA outpost will feature seasonal, partially organic menus that change quarterly.

And she’s a little bit more, shall we say, free-spirited than her older sibling. “We have an approachability—we’re not extremist,” proclaims Jessica Lowder, GM of Flower Child Santa Monica. That means for every quinoa porridge, there’s a side of gluten-free mac-and-cheese (no fake cheese here), while wheat-free chocolate chip cookies balance out all the bowls full of leafy greens and ancient grains. (Perfect for those Westsiders who don’t want to trek to Silver Lake for their vegan comfort food fix.) And there’s alcohol, including organic wine on tap.

The restaurant is also known for its super-fast service—if you don’t get your food within seven minutes from placing your order at the counter, you’re promised free dessert, whether you’re dining in or carrying out. Lowder notes that seven minutes is about how long it takes to get your grub at a fast-food restaurant, so there’s officially no excuse to go to Subway next time you’re dashing home after class at Equinox.

With a colorful, two-story space as its California flagship, it’s clear that Flower Child’s founder, Sam Fox, means business—and given that there are locations set to open in Austin and San Diego later this year, we’re willing to bet that the café is about to become as ubiquitous as True Food, and maybe even more so. “Healthy fast-casual is something everyone’s looking for,” says Lowder. “This is definitely the start of something big.” Groovy.
