From farm to your fridge: Sweet Deliverance’s suped-up winter CSA service

Chef Kelly Geary started Sweet Deliverance as a way to work with local farmers.

CSA, the shorthand for Community Supported Agriculture, barely needs explaining now that the local produce providers have sprouted up in nearly every neighborhood from Yorkville to Ditmas Park. The concept of a winter CSA, however, is still breaking ground, with Kelly Geary, founder of Sweet Deliverance NYC, leading the charge.

“New Yorkers tend to eat out more in the winter because it’s so much easier than schlepping groceries home in the snow,” says Geary. “Doing a winter CSA is a cool way to get this whole package of goodies delivered to you while supporting a local farm.”

Geary, who honed her cooking skills at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, takes the CSA concept one step further, turning bushels of produce into prepared food. (Finally, someone who knows what to do with all those root vegetables.)

With bounty from Paisley Farm in Tivoli, NY, she makes baked goods, salads, vegetable sides, and entrees, including braised meat dishes. Check out a typical winter menu here. On Monday evening, she delivers it to your door and, voila, you have a week’s worth of “upscale, seasonal comfort food,” made from impeccable sourced ingredients. (Read: beans and grains from Cayuga Pure Organics and cream from the Battenkill Vally Creamery.) “All you really need to shop for is juice and chips,” jokes Geary, who whips up all these dishes in a commercial kitchen space in Bed-Stuy.

Convenience, fantastic ingredients, and Geary’s talents come at a price, of course. The CSA share costs $375 for 16 weeks. Then you pay Geary for her private chef and delivery service, which is $350/week. An expensive service to be sure, but if you’re someone who dines out 3 to 5 nights a week and buys lunch, this could be a cost effective and healthy alternative. (We’re considering splitting the arrangement with the couple next door.)
