A new vegan restaurant will open its doors in Silver Lake this summer, and its proprietors are an unexpected pair with very different backgrounds.
Moby (yes, the “Porcelain” Moby) is teaming up with Food Network host Anne Thorton, a pastry chef previously at New York City’s Waverly Inn and Hotel Griffou, to create Little Pine, an eatery with a seasonal, plant-based menu and a community focus.
“People need a place where they can relax and feel looked after, which is our goal for Little Pine,” Moby says in a press release. “We will not only provide remarkable food, but also a serene space that is an extension of our neighborhood and community.”
While Thorton recently got into vegan cooking, Moby has been vegan for the past 27 years, and his first cafe, Teany, opened on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in 2002. (He ended his involvement there several years ago.) He’s also well-known for his animal rights activism and is a fixture on the yoga scene, performing at festivals like Wanderlust.
Little Pine will serve vegan comfort food like Mushroom Mint Pea Pate and Mushroom Leek Pot Pie, made with 100 percent organic ingredients. It will debut with a dinner menu, then launch breakfast and lunch in the fall.
Tatum Kendrick of Studio Hus designed the space to combine “a laid-back California spirit with a modern riff on nature,” and a retail area at the front will also sell eco-chic home goods and other gifts from Moby and Thorton’s favorite artisans.
