Recipe: Taryn Toomey’s Detoxing Turmeric Tonic

detox tonicYou may be feeling a little, ahem, stuffed.

For Taryn Toomey, New York City’s downtown fitness phenom and founder of one of the city’s most-buzzed-about workouts of 2015, this turmeric tonic is one of the first steps in detoxing the body. And one of the easiest, we can say first hand.

It’s the first thing (after tongue scraping) that clients on her mind-body-food cleanse called The Layer do in the morning, and you can join them in your own kitchen.

After the holidays, “the body could use the extra support to return to homeostasis,” Toomey says. “I love this tonic because it’s a great way to start your day off with a self-care ritual that creates a healthy environment in the body and ignites the digestive system.”

The health benefits of turmeric—it’s anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and filled with antioxidants—really spice up this simple, hot drink. But each of the other ingredients has its own super power, too. Lemon helps alkalize the body and flush out the liver, cayenne revs up the metabolism, and ginger improves the absorption of nutrients, Toomey explains.

Ingredients
1 whole lemon
2 healthy dashes of turmeric
A bit of fresh ginger (use a micro plane)
A small pinch of cayenne

Squeeze the whole lemon into a large mug or mason jar, add the other ingredients, and then fill the mason jar with hot water, stir, and drink slowly.
