When you’re busy working the party circuit, the holidays can feel like one long hangover. (So. Much. Champagne.) And while celebrating is totally deserved, sometimes your body needs a break from the booze. It’s one reason why cutting alcohol out completely is so popular come January. (Haven’t you heard? Sober socializing is having a moment.)
But you don’t have to wait until 2017 to get a jump-start on your resolutions—so bless Ariane Resnick, CNC, and her new book, The Thinking Girl’s Guide To Drinking, for proving that sipping healthfully and getting tipsy aren’t mutually exclusive.
While there are some intriguing boozy recipes (think cocktails crafted with inflammation-fighting herbs), it’s the virgin drinks—featuring gut-boosting bitters and seriously low-sugar nutritional profiles—that will have you doing a double-take. (Shirley Temple of your youth, this ain’t.)
Here, Resnick shares three mocktails from her book here so you can say “cheers” while still making it to your 7 a.m. spin class the next day.

Lava Sparks Ginger Beer
Making your own ginger beer is going to taste way better than a bottled version because you’re making it with fresh lime and ginger juice—which happens to be good for your gut (and can be a lifesaver with so much bloat-causing party food going around). This recipe only calls for four ingredients, so there’s no missing a minute of the festive fun.
1. Shake the ginger juice, lime juice, and coconut sugar in a shaker until the sugar is dissolved.
2. Pour into a pint glass and fill with the sparkling water, stirring briefly to combine.

Now that you have some homemade ginger beer, you can use it as the base for another gut-happy mocktail. Fresh beet juice is a beauty booster that’s good for your skin (unlike alcohol, which is dehydrating and can make your face blotchy and puffy—no fun). And, bonus, the veggie turns the drink an Instagram-ready magenta.
2 oz. fresh beet juice
5 oz. Lava Sparks Ginger Beer (recipe above)
1 slice ginger, for garnish
1. Fill a highball glass with ice and add the beet juice and ginger beer.
2. Stir briefly to combine and garnish with the ginger slice.
Radishes are definitely the wild card in this recipe, but the prebiotic veggie adds a crispness and touch of bitterness, playing off the sweetness of the blackberries and kiwi—two fruits that also have prebiotics. Literally everything in this mocktail is good for your gut!
6 blackberries, plus 1 for garnish
1/2 kiwi, peeled
1 radish, thinly sliced
5 oz. kefir
1. Muddle the six blackberries, kiwi, and radish (reserving one slice for the garnish) with two ounces kefir in a shaker. Add ice and shake.
2. Pour the contents into a highball glass and add fresh ice to fill, then pour in the remaining three ounces of kefir.
3. Garnish with the radish slice and the blackberry.
