How to one-up the old-fashioned Mother’s Day brunch

If you’re on the same page as Busy Philipps and want to #banthebrunch, there’s another idea for how to celebrate your mama this year: Bring the party to her and throw her a Mother’s Day bash at home. Your mom deserves to spend her day being treated like the queen that she is, which means letting her lounge around in PJs all day (Philipps, in fact partnered with Allswell to do just that) and serving up her favorite foods. After all, it seems like she’s owed at *least* that much after years of smiling through gifts like pasta necklaces and hand painted rocks (sorry, mom).

To find out how to create the perfect Mother’s Day scene at home, I chatted with Melissa Benham, Jennie Bishop, and Kristen Ekeland, the team behind lifestyle and design firm Studio Gild. Read on for what they have to say—and remember not to leave the cleanup to mom, either.

Keep scrolling for ideas to honor your mom—minus the mimosas.

Go floral

Flowers and Mother’s Day go together like matcha and gluten-free croissants, so consider decking your tablescape with as many spring blooms as you can gather. This doesn’t have to be a budget-buster, though. “Fresh cuts from your own yard are perfect for a wild arrangement,” says Ekeland. “Branches, greens…anything can be made interesting and beautiful for those with even the sparsest of yards.”

Get textural

Make your table as Instagrammable as possible with a mix of textures that scream spring. “Soft, modern, matte ceramic textures are the perfect complement,” says Benham. “We love Rina Menardi vases for florals, a Felt+ Fat marble glazed tray under salt and pepper shakers, or one of their bowls for a field of greens for the table to share.” Dress things up with cloth, patterned napkins (those from Karu and Blockshop are some of their favorites) or a table runner.

Add some color

Pastels? For Mother’s Day? Not exactly “groundbreaking,” but still really, really pretty. To break things up, start with a neutral place setting and add a few small bursts of color. “Set the stage with a simple quiet neutral foundation–white place setting, silver serving pieces, and glassware,” says Jennie Bishop. “Then layer in fresh green foliage and floral whites, sprinkling in a pop of feminine color such as a blush or saffron yellow.”

Hit the kitchen

Consider this a do-over for all of the years mom had to smile through breakfast in bed with raw pancakes and scrambled eggs with shells in them. Whip up one of mom’s favorite dishes (here’s a little inspo, care of a delicious looking smoke salmon frittata).

Treat her to a thoughtful gift

The last item to check off your Mother’s Day list: The gift. “Even a small, sentimental gesture provides a simple way to connect, ground, and nourish a relationship,” expert gift giver Simone LeBlanc told Well + Good. “Thoughtful gifting (especially for mom) takes time, reflection, and care. People move so quickly these days, they often forget how impactful the little details can be. Hand write that note, print that photo, and find the gift that shows that you know her; it will do wonders.”

Keep Mother’s Day 2018 stress free with these simple tips. Still don’t have a gift? Don’t panic. Here’s our guide for exactly what you should get your perfect parent this year.
