Nike’s largest store devoted to running debuted with the Fourth of July fireworks in the Flatiron District.
Considering the flagship is in the heart of boutique-fitness central (156 5th Avenue and 20th Street), steps from SoulCycle, Flywheel, Refine Method, Barry’s Bootcamp, Uplift, and Chaise23—not to mention about 15 yoga studios—it’s odd that running was chosen as the store focus.
Though there are perks we’ll take advantage of: we love that runners can safely stash bags here before heading out on a run (and not just during Nike’s own run club or marathon training program). New running innovations, like Nike+ SportWatches and the LunarGlide+4, will be easier to see and sample here (fewer tourists) in a dedicated area of the store.
That said, it’s a puzzler that men’s shoes and clothing are on the ground-floor of the sunlight-filled, LEED-certified space, while women’s clothing requires a trek to the basement. Intermix is just across the street, and the woman getting her cocktail dress for a night out is likely to fetch her new capris for boot camp at the same time.
Once downstairs, however, we found the space stocked with some must-have prints that are totally welcome in our too-much-black workout outfits. And for those who find the ruffles out of control at Lululemon this season, you’ll be glad there’s not one on the shelves at Nike.
Here are five pieces we’re eager to get our hands on—whether we use them for running or our other regular workouts. —Melisse Gelula
This tank is so edgy, with its part-graffiti, part-barbed-wire pattern. It almost looks designed by a street artist. The wicking fabric blend is super light weight, incredibly soft, and somehow not a bit clingy. Nike Mixed Method Training Tank, $45
It’s not just catering to our fashion craving for neon. Dri-FIT and mesh panels keep you cooler outside—and in spin class. And the irritation-minimizing seams and the tiny hits of reflective material are sweet details we can use. Nike Speed Tank, $60
Consider these a red-hot antidote to your closet full of black workout bottoms.
Nike Relay Print Running Capris, $58
