Chances are, you’ve got your bedtime routine down to a science. Whether it’s drinking herbal tea or unwinding with a few pages of Gabby Bernstein’s latest, by now, you’ve likely figured out the best way to power down your body, and you should be doing the same exact thing for your skin by using the best night serums around.

“Most skin repair happens at night, so it’s very important to prepare it by ‘putting skin to sleep’ as best as possible,” says board-certified dermatologist Sapna Palep, MD of Spring Street Dermatology in New York City. “Your skin is affected by circadian rhythms. Stem cells in the epidermis mainly reproduce at night, creating new skin cells that replace aged cells and reduce the appearance of aging. This is the time when these delicate processes are less likely to be interrupted or disturbed by the external environment.” Most skin issues—including UV damage, inflammation, pigmentation, and the loss of collagen, elastin, and hydration—are best remedied while you sleep.

A few other ingredients worth looking for while you snooze? Hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which help with hydration; ceramides, which strengthen the skin barrier; as well as “calming” ingredients like CBD and niacinamide, since skin tends to be more prone to inflammation at night. Below, six of the best-of-the-best evening serums that deliver on this and more.

Superflower The Everyday Serum, $68

While this serum is technically called “the everyday,” its calming, soothing, and hydrating properties make it a great choice for slathering on before bed. It’s got everything you could possibly want from a one-step serum, including vitamin C for brightening and hyaluronic acid for hydration, but the real star of the show here is CBD. You’ll get 200 milligrams of organic, hemp-derived CBD in every bottle to soothe your skin while you sleep.

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, $49

This serum doesn’t just hydrate your skin (thanks, squalane)—it also employs lavender and evening primrose essential oils, which are lauded for their ability to keep you calm while ironing out fine lines. Clearly, there’s a reason why this little blue bottle has been around for a while.

Niod Copper Amino Isloate Lipid, $90

Another beautifully blue-hued serum, this ultra sciencey formula (complete with copper, algae, and squalane) stimulates collagen production and lipids in the skin, while also building the skin barrier’s function and elasticity. It’s also rich in amino acids, adding to the protective defenses of the outer layers of your skin.

L’Occitaine Immortelle Reset Overnight Reset Oil-In Serum, $59

The intoxicating scent of jasmine isn’t the only reason to fall in love with this serum. Think of it as an “edit, undo” button for some of the damage that’s been done to your skin. It’s made with a blend of essential oils that brightens, smoothes fine lines, and fights signs of aging, and it’s no wonder it’s one of the best-selling products from this French girl favorite brand.

CBD plus lavender is like a dream (excuse the pun) for sleepy skin. The antioxidant-rich flower evens skin texture and CBD calms inflammation. Plus, hempseed and grapeseed oils deliver fatty acids that your skin will slurp right up.
